Farzati SPA has developed and is deploying its BluDev technology alongside proprietary IoT solutions to deliver cutting-edge traceability and monitoring systems across agrifood, livestock, fish, mussel, bioplastics, and biomass supply chains. These technologies ensure product safety, quality, and sustainability by tracking critical parameters in real time and optimising management throughout the production process.
The technology, featured in the prestigious ADI INDEX − which recognises the finest examples of Italian design in production − can be applied to a diverse array of products and raw materials, including olive oil, mussels, dried fruit, wheat, milk, cheese, wine, chestnuts, wood, biomass, and biopolymers.
Originating in the aerospace sector, where it has consistently specialised in quality and traceability systems, Farzati has leveraged this expertise with BluDev − along with the retail-sector experience of its CTO and project manager, Giorgio Ciardella − to develop a technological architecture that spans the entire product lifecycle, providing the digital, secure, and transparent traceability essential across supply chains handling products, whether raw materials, semi-finished, or finished goods. By integrating molecular sensors with IoT, AI, and blockchain, the technology ensures the verified origin and quality of products, processes, and supply chains.
“BluDev is already applicable to solids, liquids, powders, and more across various contexts,” says Ciardella. “However, it is undoubtedly a highly versatile technology with numerous potential applications, including textiles, combating fashion counterfeiting, and biofuels.”
BluDev offers two distinct business models for deployment. Under the first, a pay-per-use model, clients receive BluDev devices and a physical blockchain node, with access credentials to the data centre. The devices are provided on loan for the entire duration of the relationship and remain the property of Farzati. The second model is an end-user licence agreement, enabling client companies to implement the BluDev infrastructure, including potential vertical integrations and customisations, through the purchase of a user licence. In some instances, a research and development project is undertaken if the client's products have not yet been validated by BluDev technology.
Farzati has been chosen to take part in the TerraNext acceleration programme, though the rollout of BluDev has not been without its challenges. As Ciardella explains: “BluDev is a technology designed to promote quality and transparency, but in certain contexts, this approach is met with apprehension. We have often encountered situations where quality and transparency were not fully recognised as valuable attributes.”
