“In the last two years, nothing has been more important on the agenda than our health and our climate impact. Issues that will not be resolved in the next century. However, we can have an impact only with fair products, shorter supply chains, and green alternatives,” says Wouter Hagoort, co-founder of Broccoli, an equity platform that links investors and entrepreneurs in the agri-food sector.

The Dutch platform, created in 2022, helps sustainable entrepreneurs raise capital through sharefunding to grow their businesses. The digitalisation of shares simplifies negotiation between businesses and investors. The company looking for capital offers shares, and the investor – usually a backer, a client, an employee, or a supplier – invests in exchange for a share of the business. Entrepreneurs hand over part of their share capital to investors without going through banks and investment funds and bring in people who believe in the company’s mission as co-owners.

Broccoli is aimed at pioneering companies that are building fairer food chains, making production processes more sustainable, fighting food waste, and helping consumers have a healthier diet. Businesses financed through the platform include Neleman Organic Vineyards, which today sells organic wines in 30 countries and has 4,000 co-owners, as well as Irish company Happy Pear and Italian company Pascol.

Broccoli works with various entrepreneurs and experts to analyse businesses and their proposals. Then, professionals take care of the legal structure and financial research. The platform thus facilitates the relationship between the company and investors, manages economic transactions, and ensures accurate administration of the different phases of financing.
