“We are revolutionising the construction sector by providing a building system that is climate neutral, healthy, effective and designed to be safely returned to nature after use,” says EcoCocon's CEO Bjørn Kierulf. The panels manufactured by the international company with a factory in Lithuania, and a new automized one in Slovakia underway, are cradle-to-cradle certified and made of FSC-certified wood.
The straw wall system comprises an external layer of wood fibre, which prevents heat loss and ensures humidity transfer, a straw insulation layer, created using multidirectional press technology, and a load-bearing twin stud frame made of wood from sustainable forestry. The surfaces are ideal for clay plastering and compatible with a variety of standard interior finishes. Exterior can be finished with a render or any kind of ventilated facade. The EcoCocon system, made of 98% natural renewable materials, is permeable to vapour, airtight, and has no thermal bridges.
Prefabricated in a factory under rigorously controlled conditions, EcoCocon panels are made to measure with 1 mm precision and fit together perfectly. Thus, they are very fast to assemble and are suitable for any kind of building project.
Founded in 2008, EcoCocon has built 49,000 square metres of walls thus far, capturing over 4,800 tonnes of CO₂in nearly 400 projects. EcoCocon projects rise all across Europe, from Finland to Italy and the United Kingdom, with the US market emerging.
The EcoCocon straw wall system is a certified Passivhaus component – an internationally recognised energy – efficiency standard by the German Passivhaus institute. The system received an Innovation Award in 2019 from the same institute.
