New Mater-Bi films for food trays and capsules are now also compostable at home. The news was announced by Novamont at the 2024 edition of Marca, a modern organized distribution (DMO) trade show, where it presented its new compostable Mater-Bi materials for use in the production of food trays and coffee capsules.

It will then be possible for packaging manufacturers to make films for thermolamination (liner) and heat-sealing of cellulose food trays with numerous technical performances that mitigate the environmental impact of such packaging. These include container waterproofing without the use of PFASs, a gas barrier for modified atmosphere packaging and extended shelf-life, easy opening, and industrial and domestic compostability with the possibility of recycling in the paper chain as well.

"Novamont has always been committed to the development of biodegradable and compostable products," said Alberto Castellanza, Novamont's director of markets and products development, "and this is achieved on the one hand through investments and research in innovation, and on the other hand through the creation of a highly technological industrial chain, in a logic of partnership to offer concrete solutions in the field of food packaging.

By partnering with G. Mondini SpA, a company that manufactures machines and complete lines for food packaging, Novamont films can offer the food industry customized packaging solutions and a package of additional services. These include product development, technical validation testing, environmental performance assessment, compostability testing according to EN 13432, and environmental communication models.

Responding to different market needs, the new grades of Mater-Bi enable the production of various types of compostable capsules, with three processing technologies and different levels of oxygen barrier: injection-molded Mater-Bi capsules, thermoformed Mater-Bi capsules, and thermolaminated cellulose pulp capsules with Mater-Bi film (liner), which are also recyclable in home-composting.
